Greater Hazleton offers the presence of educational institutions such as Penn State University (PSU-Hazleton) and Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) that assist our local industries. LCCC and PSU are able to customize training programs to meet the needs of employers. Both campuses offer continuing education to adults and incumbent workers in such concentrations as precision machine and welding technology, industrial electricity, professional truck driving, and engineering.

Luzerne County Community College has collaborated with the Hazleton Area School District and CAN DO to bring an industrial maintenance technician (IMT) program to Greater Hazleton. Uniquely designed to fit the needs of the community, this program is available to both the rising workforce as well as underemployed members of the community. The IMT program will allow students to gain technical training skills needed by current and future employers within the region. High school students enrolled in the Hazleton Area School District’s Career Center program have the ability to earn college credits while working toward a degree or certificate customized to the needs of local industries.

Penn State Hazleton also offers an industrial maintenance program with an Advanced Process Automation certificate program. Upon successful completion of the program, students will earn a certificate from Penn State's College of Engineering. The program includes industrial math and electricity, motor controls and programmable logic controllers classes.

PSU Hazleton also provides a first-of-its-kind Alternative Energy and Power Generation track within the General Engineering degree program that prepares graduates to enter the job market in the evolving alternative and renewable energy sector, as well as the power generation industry.

In addition to LCCC and PSU, Johnson College and Penn College of Technology also have industrial programs available to help students prepare for the workforce. These colleges have associate's degrees and bachelor's degrees in programs such as architectural technology, automotive technology, electrical technology, electronic engineering, HVAC, manufacturing technology, and welding. These college programs have 80-100 percent job placements.
